NYSC Series II: Attachments

Hey Guys!

I know you have been waiting to read about my camp experience, it's in the works. I didn't have an Iphone at that time so I need to scan all the hard copy pictures I have and upload them to my computer before I put the post up, long thing, but Imma do it soonish. Batch C has started camp in most states but most people I know got Lagos and they don't start camp till the 26th. By that time, my NYSC posts will be up, tips, experience, pictures, the whole she bang. Until then I've got this really interesting post for you. Oh yeah, if you haven't read the first part of the series, start here

Bimpe sent me an email saying she loves my blog and would love her article to be shared on it. I got really excited because it's nice to know my blog is read by people I haven't met personally. It makes me happy :D

I read through her post and realised we had three mutual friends, small world and she found out about my blog through Niyi Sax on twitter. I'm pretty quiet on there but it's good to know that the little activity/noise I've made on there has had an impact. She has a tumblr page which y'all should check out and there's a little bio about her at the end too.

Enjoy :)

NYSC Series I: Gold

Hey Guys

Like I mentioned in my previous post, the NYSC Series begins today and I'm starting off with an article a friend of mine wrote on my pass out day. His name is Akinyemi and he wrote it for myself and my friend, T. Now, T had been saying NYSC is almost over, we are about to become gold. I really didn't get it, thought he just made it up but apparently it is a popular saying. You'll understand why Corpers are told they become gold after reading this article.

This is Akinyemi during his Man o'War Training

Enjoy and do leave a comment. It's slightly annoying/disappointing when effort goes into writing a post and no one comments, the views are there but comments make it interactive and are really encouraging. Some people call me and say Awww, Detuke, I like your blog, keep it up, etc. I appreciate the calls and messages but the impact is greater when you leave a comment beneath the post. You don't need to have a google profile to leave one by the way, there is an option to leave one anonymously so yeah, Leave a comment today.

This is specially dedicated to my Corper friends (I know of just 2) who turned to Gold today.
Now the year is over. At the beginning, It looked like the end of National service will never come.  But now, I am sure it feels like it started yesterday. No more “allawee”, No more day off each week in the name of Community Development Service (CDS) when you don’t get to leave your bed until 10 am (that is if you go for CDS at all), No more clearance, No more head count, No more Khaki, You are no more government Pikin (children). For some, it’s the beginning of a search for a good job, for the lucky few, they have Jobs waiting for them.
It’s a season of transformation, the beginning of exploration. It’s a fresh start, the change from Corper to Gold.
So I thought of highlighting these attributes of Gold to my Corper friends that just turned Gold and all those that have passed through the National Service system. I hope this will inspire you to greatness.

Guest Post: Decisions by Niyi Onikute (Niyi Sax)

Hey Guys!

Happy Sunday! Hope your weekend has been great, mine sure has and it ain't even over yet :) ;)

I was talking to my friend and Oga in the Saxophone Industry on Friday and he was telling me how his mum gave him her Ipad Mini and he's started writing/documenting his random thoughts. I said he should send me what he's written so far and I really enjoyed reading it. He's a Mr. Talented o and he can cook too *wink wink*. He's been featured on this blog before in picturesvideos and a mix of both in the NYSC post. Hope you enjoy reading it, remember feedback is very much appreciated.

Guest Post - 7 Lessons Learnt at 21 by Ifeoma Halim

Hello People!

Hope you've enjoyed your weekend, I sure have. You'll find out about all the cool stuff I got up to soon enough :)

My friend, Ify Halim turned 22 yesterday. She is a fellow corper and the brain behind Our Stories Inc, remember them? The spotlight was on me over at Our Stories last month and you can read all about it here. Ify wrote this interesting article about 7 things she learnt during her 21st year on Earth.

Read and Enjoy!!

Hey Guys!

In case you don’t know me, my name is Theodora Ifeoma Ebitenye Ibiere Halim… but you can call me Ify for short. *big grin* Lol.

I’m the latest 22 year old on the block and wanted to share from what had to be the most intense year of my life (and life has barely even started yet o lol). In my mind, I’m writing to myself 365 days younger, a fresh young graduate who’s clueless about this thing called NYSC and anxious about the journey ahead as an independent woman in the mad jungle that is Lagos. Detuke was nice enough to let me post it on here and to her, I say thank youu. And to you my dear reader…. stick around and you just might learn a thing or two ;)

Guest Post: I’m getting tired of defending this country

So I absolutely love it when people message me or tell me when they see me that they read my blog. It’s like my baby and I’m pleased with the progress it’s making, hit 5,000 views over the weekend and I trust that it’s only going to move onwards and upwards from now on.

I’m one of the very people that is actually enjoying my NYSC year, I’ll talk about the benefits of it in an upcoming post. But a very obvious benefit is that it’s an opportunity to increase your network. I have met a wide variety of people through NYSC, in my platoon, my room, the band, the local government, random people you meet in camp, even before NYSC started I was making new friends because of the scheme.

Anyways, I met Ihinosen in camp, he was my Close Friend’s Bunkie and we had a lot of fun times in Mammy Market (Bimpe’s tent) and on the parade ground (under the canopy). He messaged me earlier today and said he writes and will like to feature on my blog. I was pleasantly surprised, a hidden talent, it’s a pretty opinionated piece with very relevant and necessary words.

Hope you enjoy it!
