Restaurant Review: Nok by Alara

Hey Guys,

It's been a really long time since I did a restaurant review.  My last one was Villa Medici in April.

There was a food post on Beetroot recently but it isn't a restaurant, it's more of a Healthy Food Bar.
So I went to Nok by Alara on my birthday.
I had been there once before but at that time the Cafe was only open for dinner. Now, they are open for lunch and dinner and have a special lunch menu too.
Remember that time I went on a Cafe tour with Sharon of This is Ess, the last set of pictures were taken at Nok by Linguini.
The decor has got a lot of dark wood.
There are fresh flowers on the tables and one has the option of dining inside or outside.
Interesting fact: The Mocktails and Cocktails cost N3,500
At most restaurants I've visited, mocktails are cheaper than cocktails, I wonder why that isn't the case here.
We were served a complimentary bowl of potato chips.

Then we went through the menu and placed our order.

We got three appetizers.
The Sauteed Snails with Garlic, Parsley and Chilli.
It cost N3,000 and came in strips.
It was well done but wasn't as spicy as I like my snails.
The second appetizer we got was the Tamarind Glazed Chicken Wings which cost N2,500.
It was my least favourite item and my date and I felt it was uneccessary. If you want yummy wings at a great price, go to spicebowl.
The third appetizer we got was the Five Spice Duck Roll.
It was sooooo delicious, hands down my favourite dish of the day.
It cost N3,000 and came with a nice dip which had shredded carrots & spring onion
My friend said the dip gave him miso soup vibes.
We only ordered one main, the Chicken Piri Piri with Sauteed Ugwu.

It cost N4,000 and came with a really nice spicy sauce.

The snails went really nicely with the sauce.
We got a bowl of jollof rice as a Side.
It cost N1,000 and was really good.
It's made with Basmati rice and is pretty similar to the Rice from Omenka Gallery.
I'm not a Flat lay girl as I use a 50mm so would have to stand on a platform or tiptoe to get everything I want in the frame.
However, I couldn't resist taking these pictures from above as the dark wood table contrasts so nicely with the food. Wouldn't this picture make a lovely post card?
I'm about to do a food photography course to understand the technicality of this art form as I love food photography too much, got to take it to the next level.
I'm not a huge fan of ugwu but my friend loved it.
There were quite a number of expatriates in the restaurant and the snails & prawns seemed very popular.
I really love the salt and pepper shakers.
I also love the fact that the waitresses wear iro and buba.
Isn't this an amazing picture.
We both got to the restaurant pretty hungry and left there very satisfied :)
As you can see we emptied our plates :D
Have you been to Nok before? What did you think of it?
Our receipt came attached to this post card and our bill came to a total of N15,000.
We ordered a Big Bottle of Water which cost N1,500. Not bad for a fine dining restaurant, ayy?

N15,000 is about £30 with this current exchange rate, I pray our economy gets better o!

  8. So I finally went to NOK and it was great just as you described it. Food was really well made and the portions weren't as small as I'd been led to believe.

The restaurant itself was quite nice too but my wife and I preferred to sit inside than out.

Fun fact you left out tho, there's music in the bathrooms. lol

All in all a great place which i will definitely visit again. Many thanks for the very helpful review.
