Protective Style: Crotchet Braids

Hey Guys!

Happy Sunday!

What do you think of the new  layout? Have you explored the tabs at the top? I'm glad that I can now cross number 10 off my 2015 goals list :) I'm not sure that I need a Logo to be honest, let me know if you think otherwise.

I did something different to my hair last week, I put it in a protective style, Crotchet Braids. I got it done at home and the price wasn't too bad. Holla if you want details.

Doyin of chloe's makeover has got crotchet braids in at the moment and she has put up a pretty detailed post explaining how she takes care of it, check it out here.

I used old hair, the afro kinky I had during NYSC, the brand is Supreme.
The first step is to cornrow your hair
You can do fewer cornrows if you don't want your hair to be too full
The rows which have two becoming one are for the partings
I called her on the day I wanted to do it and she couldn't find a latch hook in the market so she ended up using a regular crotchet needle which costs N200.
The good thing about this hairstyle is that my hair underneath is protected and there is no strain on my edges.
When cornrowing your hair, make sure you use attachment and join the ends as seen below.

It came out really full, not as heavy as it looks. I've only had it in for a couple of days, I still massage my edges with Black Jamaican Castor Oil and I use leave in conditioner/my spray bottle mix when I think it needs moisturising.

Ekene of The Kink and I did something similar for her friend's sister, check it out here. They've also got a post on caring for your hair when it's in braids, check it out here.

  2. I love the new layout! Congrats on the dot com Tuke.
I like crochet braids because they are super easy to do and you have enough access to your hair and scalp.

  3. Congrats on your blog, the design is unique (pink).
I have been loving crochet hair recently, in currently making a crochet wig since I'm more of a wigs person, I find it stressful to sit for hours.
    You look great btw.

  7. Your hair looks gorgeous Tuke! I had to order my crochet needle from Aliexpress because its scarce and the few persons that have sell at a ridiculous price! I also make crochet braids here in Abuja and just took out a 3 week old one. You can read about it on my blog - momashairjourney.blogspot.com. Have a lovely day.

    1. Thanks Hilda. Oh wow, how much was it on Ali Express and how much did other people sell it for? Oh, nice, I just read the post on your blog and I sent the link to a friend in Abuja who wants to get it done. I sleep with mine in a hair net.

  8. Where have I been. Didn't know you had a new layout too. It's looking all different and lovely. well done. And yes, a logo would be really nice. I have tried making crochet braids on my own but got tired and didn't bother doing it again. But I made a crochet wig recently and it was super easy. I would not mind knowing details about how you made yours since you said it ain't that expensive hehe. And I'm still surprised on how she was able to do the crochet with the pin o. She must be a professional if she found it easy

      Thank you :)
Oh, ok, I haven't seen a crotchet wig yet, it sounds interesting.
Lool, she is a real professional o, this is what she does for a living.

  9. Wow Wow Wow! The new layout is really lovely. I however miss the yellow one small sha. It was so like bright and YELLOW! Lol.

And am i the only one who is enjoying the background music of Trust??? So So COOOOOL!

The crochet braids look nice, don't know if i can try them as they'd give me the perception of a weave-on, which for some reason causes acne breakout on my face. I'd rather braid o jare.

    1. Hehehe, Thank you :) :D
Lool, it was very bright, that's why I made sure the new one still had a touch of Yellow!
Yayyyy, you are the second person to say something about it but to be honest I just added the background music about an hour ago.
Oh, okay then, your skin is super sensitive o!

    2. Me sef i tire for the sensitivity. That is why natural hair works so much for me, the eay it grows up like a halo, away from my face. I wonder though, will the music play if site is opened via mobile? As i have been using my desktop. So good music! We usually have a Music+Comedy quarterly event in my church called Njoy, The Elevation Church. Look it up if you like, and see if this is a platform to explore in terms of ministration.

    3. It doesn't play automatically from my mobile but you can click on the play button of the music player which is in the side bar. Oh, nice, sounds like an interesting event, I will look it up!

    4. Hi Chioma, just my opinion, but concerning your weave sensitivity, have you tried soaking and washing any weave in apple cider vinegar and water before using it? The wash takes off the preservative that is used on the weave and which is most likely causing the acne.
Tuke the blog looks very professional and I'm glad you still have a little yellow and pink here and there.

    5. Thank you Maureen. I had to make sure there was a little colour in the mix :)

  10. Hello Tuke,

Your new hairstyle suits you beautifully.

A few months ago, I bought the crochet latch hook in Lagos from a lady called Zubechi (08105111011) - She was very courteous.
